Man who filed four $100K claims for ’stolen’ $70K ring to be arraigned

SANTA ANA — A 39-year-old Verizon sales executive is scheduled to be arraigned April 12 on charges of filing phony insurance claims for a lost engagement ring.
Marcus Darryl Williams, who lives in Los Angeles, told police in January that a thief stole the 5-carat engagement ring from his office at 5 Hutton Center Drive in Santa Ana, police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said today. He paid $70,000 for the ring, Bertagna added.
Williams, who earns $400,000 annually, was freed after posting $20,000 bail, according to Bertagna and court records.
Williams told police he put the engagement ring in a backpack at his office because he wanted to get it cleaned before he proposed to his fiancee on Valentine’s Day, Bertagna said.
However, investigators determined Williams had filed insurance claims with four companies for $100,000 each, and police are looking into a claim with a fifth insurance company, Bertagna said.
Court records show Williams was charged with five counts of making false or fraudulent claims, Bertagna said.
“After questioning him the ring miraculously reappeared,” Bertagna said.
Williams was arrested at his office March 12, Bertagna said.
Williams was arrested in Chicago in 1995 on suspicion of writing three checks to himself from the company he worked for that totaled $59,286, Bertagna said. He was later convicted and sentenced to nine years in prison, but was paroled after serving a year, Bertagna added.

Makes me wonder what it takes to be an executive for a large corporation. How does a Corporation justify providing a career for this caliber of person? Makes me wonder if this demonstrates the executive level standards, who do you hire for entry level positions?
